Red Bull | Mixed-Media Animation
I created this vertical social media spec ad for Red Bull Pink Edition, shooting on an old digital camcorder to capture that saturated, colourful look of early 2000s adverts. Inspired by the energy of old MTV idents, I wanted the animation to feel just as playful and vibrant. I used frame by frame digital drawing and rotoscoping to bring bursts of colour and movement into the footage, experimenting as I went along and learning how to bring my ideas to life through a more tactile approach to digital animation.

Rotoscoping was a new challenge for me, and I went into the shoot with only a rough idea of how I’d bring the animation to life in post production. Although I would approach the shoot differently now, I was able to create something close to what I’d imagined. The simple, whimsical style worked well for the ad, and the process taught me a lot about how to shoot footage with rotoscoping in mind, making the animation easier to create and more seamless.

I wanted the hand-drawn motion graphics to feel playful and full of energy, with each shape and mark moving in sync with the sound effects. I animated everything frame by frame, experimenting with timing, colour and movement to give the graphics a tactile, handmade feel that complemented the ad’s vibrant, early 2000s inspired aesthetic.

I wanted to bring the brand logo to life with simple animation that drew attention to the name and design without taking away from the original. The aim was to add movement and interest while keeping the focus on the logo itself, making sure the animation complemented the design rather than competing with it.

I wanted the hand drawn motion graphics to sync with the action on screen, bringing the character’s sigh to life. I experimented with different ways to make the graphics feel like air as the sigh began and faded away, playing with movement and effects until I found an approach that worked.
