Chasing That Early 00s Feeling on a Low Budget Shoot

I shot this one with a Som Berthiot Pan-Cinor 17.5 to 70mm f/2.4. It's a 16mm film lens I had a friend help adjust the focus to match the correct distance of my camera's sensor. I used an APSC camera so I didn't have to crop as much in post. Why go through all that hassle? Because I wanted a vintage look straight out of camera, not something cooked up in post. The brief was nostalgic and analogue, so I chased that early 00s feeling. Quick zooms, that slightly imperfect texture, the kind of lo-fi warmth that makes you want to grab your mates and go outside.

The budget was tight, so I got creative. I wanted to play with a low-budget step printing effect. That choppy, juttery look that was everywhere in that era. The lens helped me get there, giving me more control over the image without needing expensive kit or a heavy grade.

We shot in Nottingham, where the band are based. I did all the pre-production from London. Location scouting, permits, everything. I'd already got a look at the location online before the shoot, but I told the council I needed to scout the actual location when I got there. They were fine with that. So I arrived the day before the shoot and went out to find the right spot. I needed somewhere nice, somewhere that would allow us to have the space to shoot without intrusion from the public. We also put up signs around the area just to let people know we were filming, just in case they heard music and wondered what was going on. It's a small detail, but it made the day run smoother.

The hardest part? Getting the band's instruments to the shoot. The spot was in nature, foot access only. So we hauled everything in ourselves. Drums, amps, guitars, the works. The band helped too. That's the kind of energy I love.

Alt Blk Era are sisters. And my own sister came up from London to help me on the day. That made it feel special. Like family making something together.

I always wanted to be a rock star. But growing up, there weren't many that looked like me. Alt Blk Era do. They're a rock band that look like me. And young me? She'd be so proud.
